Soil Quantity Calculation

For a civil works construction class I'm taking, we're learning how to calculate soil quantities given a topographic map. We're supposed to break the topo into grid squares and calc the cut and fills appropriately and from this calc soil quantities by the above mentioned 2 methods.

This might be a big favor but I've searched around for a good video on end area method and cross sectional method on youtube and google but no avail. If somebody can produce one and send me the link, I'll rate your response accordingly.

Since there's little (none actually) video or even step-by-step explanations of how to do this, I'm sure you'd be the pioneer in doing so.
