Question

Software Security

The following table contains the partition table from the Master Boot Record for the volume in Figure 5.9, it is a list of sectors stored in different partitions. For each sector and partition, calculate the absolute address of the sector. (Hint: use a spreadsheet)

Table 5.5: Partition Table for the drive in Figure 5.9

(e.g.) Partition 0, sector 1

8 + 1 = 9

a. Partition 0, sector 8,184

b. Partition 1, sector 2,040

c. Partition 1, sector 10,000

d. Partition 2, sector 1

e. Partition 2, sector 4,088

Explanation / Answer

There are three partitions are created i.e. P0, P1 and P2. Each Partition Startinng,Ending Sector (final Sector) and Total numbers of sectors are given in partition Table 5.5. and Size of Partion is specified in Figure 5.9 (in MB).

We can use the formula to find the address of required sector as

Starting sector of the partition + Sector numbers (whose address is required)

a. Partition 0, sector 8,184

Partition 0 start from Sector 8 and we have required to find the address of sector 8184 so the absolute address can be calculated as

8+8184 = 8192

b. Partition 1, sector 2,040

Partition 1 start from Sector 30728 and we have required to find the address of sector 2040 so the absolute address can be calculated as

30728 + 2040 = 32768

c. Partition 1, sector 10,000

Partition 1 start from Sector 30728 and we have required to find the address of sector 10000 so the absolute address can be calculated as

30728 + 10000 = 40728

d. Partition 2, sector 1

Partition 2 start from Sector 61448 and we have required to find the address of sector 1 so the absolute address can be calculated as

61448 + 1 = 61449

e. Partition 2, sector 4,088

Partition 2 start from Sector 61448 and we have required to find the address of sector 4088 so the absolute address can be calculated as

61448 + 4088 = 65536
