Question
A college has 200 classroomsand 400 faculty offices. Each classroom has 12 fluorescent tubelights each consuming 110 watts, including ballast electricity. Thefaculty offices each have 6 fluorescent tube lights each consuming110 watts including ballast electricity. The college is open 240days per year and during each of those 240 days, the lights arekept on 24 hours per day. If the unit cost of electricity is 0.082cents per kilowatt hour, how much money will the college save, inone year, if they keep the lights on only 20 hours per day insteadof 24 hours per day for each of the 240 days a year thatthe college is open? Please show all steps. This a lifesaver problem, thank you in advance. A college has 200 classroomsand 400 faculty offices. figure out how many watts are consumed in the college: 110*(200*12+400*6)=528000W=528kW now figure out how many hours each bulb is in operation for: 24*240=5760 hours. 528kW*5760hrs*(.00082$/KW-hr)=$2494 for 20 hrs a day, the amount is: 20*240*528*.00082=$2078. the amount saved is then 2494-2078=$416 .082 cents seems like a small amount. if you meant dollars, just add 2 zeros on to the end of each the dollar amounts.
