A collar is used to add some mass to a rod to reduce the vibration of the system. The cutout view of the collar is shown in (b), while Figure 2 (a) provides its dimensions. To determine the number of turns for tightening the bolt prior to yielding in the collar, a finite element is used to reveal the von Mises stress pattern. Determine if a 2D finite element model for the collar is appropriate. Assume the rod is rigid.
