Question

You notice several bloodstains on the wall and ceiling behind the male and the chair. The male appears to have a large wound on the top of his head and the upper portion of his forehead. The bloodstains appear to be in a line as the bloodstains go up the wall and onto the ceiling. There are 4 lines of these particular bloodstains identified on the wall and ceiling. There are a few bloodstains on the floor about a foot from where the male’s feet are positioned. There are a few bloodstains on the opposite wall from where the chair is positioned. The furniture and objects in the room all seem to be in place.

There are no other bloodstains noted within the residence. The residence consists of a single level floor plan with a kitchen, dining room, living room, 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

Explanation / Answer

From the bloodstain evidence it can be either a passive stain or impact stain. Passive stains include drops, flows and pools typically resulting from gravity acting on an injured body. Impact stains result from blood projections through air and is seen as a spatter or splash. Gunshot spatter include forward and backward spatter. Forward spatter of blood is a mist and backward spatter is in the form of blood drops behind the victim. Gunshot wounds will form small droplets spread over a wide area while impact spatter will form larger drops and concentrated in areas directly adjacent to victim.

From blood stain evidence and wound on victim we can infer that he has been hit or given a large blow with a sharp object at the top of the head. The wound on the forehead must be from a gunshot or a blow witha sharp object like axe. This is because blood stains are found in front of him next to his foot and on the ceiling, walls next to him and behind him. Shape of bloodstain depend greatly on the force used to propel blood on the wall or any other surface. Since the person is hit with a sharp object there is a great impact which propels blood with force on to the ceiling and walls.

Documentation,collection and preservation of bloodstain:

The crime scene should be sealed and no person should be allowed inside. Investigators alone should investigate the scene and no objects or furniture should be misplaced or moved. Fingerprints if any should be collected.

Blood stains can be wet or dry. Dry blood can be swabbed witha cotton or tape lifted and taken to the lab for analysis. We need to determine whether its human blood and create a DNA profile. Liquid blood is collected in a cotton swab, refrigerated or frozen and taken to lab for analysis. Other way of collecting blood stains is by cutting away the stained surface or material, drying and packaging stained objects. High resolution photography with rulers placed next to it for measurement is done for further analysis. This is for identifying size and shape of blood stains.
