Question

18 P My I metal s C carries no net charge. Spheres A and B are touched together and then separated. Sphere C is then touched to sphere A and separated from it. Last, sphere C is touched to sphere B and separated from it. For the following questions, express your answers in terms of q (a) How much charge ends up on sphere C? (b) What is the total charge on the three spheres before they are allowed to touch each other? (e) What is the total charge on the three spheres after they have touched? Additional Materials Section 184

Explanation / Answer

(a) Initially, sphere A have charge, Qa = +6q

sphere B have charge, Qb = +7q

sphere C have charge, Qc = 0

when sphere A and B are touched togather, Charge on each sphere, Qa1 = Qb1 = (+6q + 7q)/2 = +6.5q

Now sphere C is touched to sphere A, So, charge on each sphere, Qc1 = Qa2 = 6.5q/2 = +3.25q

Finally sphere C is touched to sphereB,

so, charge on sphere C = charge on sphere B = Qc2 = Qb2 = (+3.25 + 6.5)q/2 = +4.875q

(b) Total charge on the three spheres before they are allowed to touch eac other = +6q + 7q + 0 = +13q

(c) Total charge on the three spheres after they have touched = +3.25q + 4.875q + 4.875q = +13q
