Question

Four boxes are placed side-by-side (touching) on a horizontal surface. From left to right, the boxes are: box 1, with a mass of 1.0 kg; box 2, with a mass of 2.0 kg; box 3, with a mass of 3.0 kg, and box 4, with a mass of 4.0 kg. A force F = 30 N, directed right, is applied to the left side of box 1, The coefficients of friction (static and kinetic) between the boxes and the surface are both equal to 0.180 Use g = 10 N/kg for this problem. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the acceleration of block 3. 32 x m/s/s (b) Calculate the magnitude of the net force acting on block 3. (c) Calculate the magnitude of the force applied on block 3 by block 2

Explanation / Answer

A) acceleration a = F external /total mass

= (30- 0.180*(1+2+3+4)*9.8)/(1+2+3+4)

= 1.236 m/s^2

B) Net force on block 3 = ma = 3*1.236 = 3.708 N

C) Let this force be N. Taking block 3 and 4 as system,

Fnet = ma = (3+4)*1.236

N - 0.180*(3+4)*9.8 = 7*1.236

N = 0.180*7*9.8+7*1.236

= 21 N answer
