Question

Hi, can you please help me solve the following problem? It's notfrom a textbook, but we use the Giancoli Textbook as a resource.Thank you! Please provide step by step process of how youapproached the problem.

(a) Your bike is upside-down, and you made the front wheel spin at4.0 revolutions/s. Then you apply a steady force on the brake, andthe wheel stops in a quarter of a turn. Assuming the angularacceleration was constant, what was its
value?
Ans.: -64 = -201 rad/s.

(b) What total torque were the brake pads causing? The diameter ofthe wheel is 26” (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and its mass is 3 lbs (1kg = 2.2 lbs); use the approximation that the entire mass of thewheel is uniformly distributed along the rim.
Ans.: 145 Nm

(c) If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the brake padsand the wheel rim is k = 0.6, with what force was each of the twobrake pads pressing onto the rim?
Ans.: 365 N.

Explanation / Answer

Initial angular speed w = 4.0revolutions/s
                                   = 4 * 2 rad / s final angular speed w ' = 0 rad / s Anfular displacement = quarter of a turn                                    = / 2                                    = .1.57 rad from the angular acceleration = [ w ' ^ 2 - w ^ 2] / 2                                               = 201 rad / s ^ 2
