Question
Hi, can you please help me solve the following problem? It's notfrom a textbook, but we use the Giancoli Textbook as a resource.Thank you! Please provide step by step process of how youapproached the problem.A certain star has a planet whose orbital period is 1 Julian year(which is precisely 365.25 days). Another planet orbits the samestar with the period of 11 Julian years and 314 days. The distanceof the second planet from the star is obviously greater than thedistance of the first planet from the star. How many timesgreater?
Explanation / Answer
First we must find the time period of second planet , Time period = 11 Julian year +314 days = 11*(365.25) + 314 =4331.75 days Let distance of first planet be R From Kepler's third law , T2 is directly proportional to R3 Then T12/ T22 =R13 / R23 Putting the values 365.252/4331.752 =R3/R23 R23=140.65R3 So R2 = 5.2 R So distance of second planet is 5.2 times the distance of firstplanet .
