My Notes Ask Your Teacher 8. 0/2 points | Previous Answers SercP10 22.P.059.MI. The figure below shows the path of a beam of light through several layers with different indices of refraction. (Assume na 1.06.) n= 1.60 n= 1.40 1.20 r02 (a) If ?1 = 24.0°, what is the angle ?2 of the emerging beam? Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. b) what is the smallest incident angle 1 to have total internal reflection at the surface between the medium with n-1.20 and the medium with n. = 10 Need Help? Solution,
A) Using Snell's law,
sin 24/ sin (theta)2 = n4 /1.6 = 1.06/1.6
(Theta)2 = 37.88 degree
B)
For n = 1.2, sin(theta)= 1.06/ 1.2 = 0.883
For n = 1.4, sin i / sin(theta) = 1.2/ 1.4
sin i = 0.883 * 0.857 = 0.7569
For n = 1.6, sin(theta) 1 / sin i = 1.4 /1.6
sin ?1 = 0.7569 * 0.875 = 0.662
so angle, (theta)1 = 41.47
