Question

someone tried helping me but didnt get the correctanswer..
i think i only have one or two tries left so i really need to getthe right answer
someone please help!! I couldn't find any solution in the textbook help either
So can someone please show me the steps how to do it thank you in advance and I will rate you a lfiesaver!! An electron has a speed of 0.62c.

(a) Find the speed of a proton that has thesame kinetic energy as the electron.
c

(b) Find the speed of a proton that has the same momentum as theelectron.

Explanation / Answer

You have to first find the relativistic kinetic energy of theelectron: .      KE   = ( -1) mc2      where   mc2 = rest energy ofelectron = 0.5110 MeV . and    = (1 -u2/c2)-1/2 =   ( 1   - 0.622)-1/2 =   1.274532     so ,     KE of electron = (1.274532 - 1) * 0.5110 =    0.140286 MeV . Now do the same for the proton, workingbackward...   . KE   = ( -1) mc2      where   mc2 = rest energy of proton= 938.272 MeV .     0.140286   = ( - 1)* 937.272 . 0.000149515 = ( - 1)             = 1.000149515 .       1.000149515 = (1 -u2 / c2 )-1/2 .         0.999701   = 1 - u2/c2            u/c = 0.01729       . speed of proton =   0.01729 c .
