Question

A ball of mass 5 kg on Earth is brought to the surface of acertain planet. Where g = 12 m/s^2. (a) Find the mass and theweight of the ball at the planet's surface. (b) Calculate thegravitational accerleration at height "R" above the planet'ssurface (i.e. at distance 2R from the plant's center), where "R "is the planet's radius. (c) Find the mass and the weight of theball at the position in part (b). I got this question wrong on my homework. i have no idea howto do it at all. Can someone please help me. Explanation / Answer

     Given that the mass of ball is m = 5kg      acceleration due to gravity on the planetis g' = 12 m/s2 ----------------------------------------------------------------         (a) mass of the ball at the planet is m = 5 kg (no change )    weight of the ball at the planet is w =mg' = 5kg *12 m/s2   = 60 N (b) The acceleration due to gravity on the planetis        g' = G M /R2       If height is R then       g1 = GM / (2R)2                  =(1/4)GM/ R2                                                                                   = g' / 4 = 3 m/s2 (c) mass of the body at height h from surface is m = 5 kg ( nochange ) weight is W = m*g1       = 15 N
