Question

The reduction potential for methylene blue is such that it can be reduced by components of the electron transport chain and can itself, when reduced, reduce O_2 to H_2O. Suggest why massive doses of methylene blue might serve to counteract cyanide poisoning. What effect does intracellular citrate have on fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism pathways? Be specific about the enzymatic steps affected. How is citrate transported from the mitochondria to affect these pathways? Why is ketone production in diabetes linked to acidosis? Provide a biochemical explanation.

Explanation / Answer

(9) Since the reduction potential of methylene blue is similar to that of oxygen and can be reduced by components of the electron transport chain. Methylene blue can replace the cyanide ion from the Complex IV, hence it can be used to reverse the cyanide binding.
