Using the Hall-Petch plot for low carbon steels and a Fe-Ni alloy, answer the following: List the ferrite (bcc-iron) grain size range for commercial steels in units of pm. Compare the yield stress found in this range to the yield stress of hot rolled 1020 steel (see the appendix in Callister) For the Hall-Petch equation, find the constants sigma 0 and k_y for Fe and low carbon steel. Using the Hall-Petch equation from part (b), calculate the grain size needed to obtain a yield stress of 900 MPa for Fe. Comment on why it may be difficult to achieve this grain size from a cold working and annealing (recrystallization) procedure.
