Question
A cylindrical rod of brass originally 10 mm in diameter is to be reduced to a diameter of 7.5 mm. The circular cross section is to be maintained during deformation. A cold-worked 3. tensile strength in excess of 380 MPa and a ductility of at least 15 %EL are desired. Design a that involves a combination of drawing and annealing processes. Use the charts below 120 1040 Steel 120 1040 Stee 00800 100 Brass 180 30 Brass 60 Copper 40 Copper 100 o 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Percent cold work 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Percent cold work 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Percent cold workExplanation / Answer
% Cold work = 10 - 7.5 / 10 = 25 %
Required tensile strength = 380 MPa & ductility of more than 15 %
As we can see from chart (b) at 25% cold work we get approx. 450 MPa of strength and from chart (c) we get a ductilit of approx 18% EL
Therefore one can use the process (b) followed by process (c) to obtain the required properties.
