Question

Question Five Serena Hotel hires you, a naval architect, to design a dinner excursion boat for use on Lake Victoria. You develop a preliminary design and then meet with Serena Hotel's tender board to discuss it. During this diecussion you disagree with J Adakun (The Chairman of the board) over the ultimate safety of the boat. While Adakun feels that the design should be simplified, you belileve that a simpler design could endanger the publlc-even if it meets current national standards Adakun demands that you turn over his drawings, so that he can give them to Isaac, a naval architect who has agreed to complete the project as Adakun wishes. Adakun is willing to pay you a fair price for the drawings. Should you sell the drawings? What else, if anything, should you do instead or in ion2 Rxnlain and iustify (20 marks)

Explanation / Answer

A major resposibility of a professional like architect/engineer is to ensure the safety of public at large. It further means that whatever product or service is designed by them should have safety inbuilt into it as per laid down standards.

In the present case as naval architect I have been asked to design a dinner excursion boat for use on a lake.It is obvious that this boat will carry large number of people at any time and that too at night for dinner. These people will include men, women and children and maybe physically challenged persons. Many of them may not be knowing swimming or are able to save themselves in event of an unforseen event. Therefore it dwells on me as naval architect to design a boat having plenty of safeguards which may mean higher cost and time. All the safe guards are included in the preliminary design.

Now the Chairman of the board wants it to be simplified (which means compromise on some safety aspects)and if I do not agree ,then asking me to handover to another architect who is agrreable to compromise. In such a situation if I am convinced about my design even though it is in preliminary stage, I must first take a third party expert opinion on it and if that party concurs my design I will confront the chairman with that and try to convince him not to compromise on safety and follow my design. If however he still does not agree then I will refuse to sell my drawings as I will even then continue to be a party to a unsafe design to be developed by another architect.

So if I am convinced about soundness and safety aspects of my design then I should not compromise and not sell it.
