Question 5

Describe the nature of the following types of radiative emission from radioactive decay. alpha beta (-) gamma Rank the three forms from most to least dangerous if the radiation comes at you from outside your body. Why could there not be much difference if you had eaten the radioactive material? Carbon 14, written as ^14 _6 C, is the basis of radioactive dating of carbon materials up to about 60,000 years old. ^14 _6 C decays by beta emission ^0 _-1 e. What isotope is formed? At the atomic level, is there any chemical difference in how fission proceeds in a nuclear bomb vs. how it proceeds in a fission reactor? What does "fissile" mean? Give the two examples. What do control rods do in nuclear reactor?

Explanation / Answer

Fissile :- Fissile can fission by absorbing a neutron which have very low kinetic energy. Simply adding the neutron adds enough energy for it to fission. This is due to the odd number of neutrons in the nucleus which will rearrange themselves to release the energy.

example: U-235, Pu-239, Pu-241
