Question
Gold, which has a mass of 19.32 g for each cubic centimeter of volume, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber.(a) If a sample of gold, with a mass of 38.68 g, is pressed into a leaf of 2.100 µm thickness, what is the area of the leaf?
_______________________ m2
(b) If, instead, the gold is drawn out into a cylindrical fiber of radius 2.000 µm, what is the length of the fiber?
_______________ m
i got 9533.6666667 m2 for the first one and it says its wrong...also tried in scientific notation but its wrong..no idea why...i found volume...then found area by area * thickness = volume PLEASEEE help
Explanation / Answer
Volume of gold = mass/density = 38.68/19.32 = 2.002 cm3 = 2.002 x 10-6 m3
(a) Thickness = 2.100 µm = 2.100 x 10-6 m
Volume of leaf = area x thickness
2.002 x 10-6 = area x (2.100 x 10-6)
area = 0.9533 m2
(b) Radius r = 2.000 m = 2.000 x 10-6 m
Circular area = r2 = 1.257 x 10-11 m
Volume of cylinder = circular area x length
2.002 x 10-6 = 1.257 x 10-11 x length
length = 1.593 x 105 m
