Question
A particle has a charge of q=+5.60C and is located atthe coordinate origin. An electric field of Ex=+245 N/C existsalong the +x axis. A magnetic field also exists, and its x and ycomponents are Bx=+1.8 T and By= +1.4 T. Calculate the force(magnitude and direction) exerted on the particle by each of thethree fields when it is (a) stationary,(b) moving along the +x axis at a speed of 375m/s,and (c) moving along the +z axis at a speed of 375m/s. (a) stationary, no magnetic force, only elec force . F = qE = 5.60 x 10-6 * 245 = 0.001372N along the x axis 0.001372 i . (b) when moving along the x axis at speed 375, there isa mag force in the z direction only from the y component of the Bfield. So . Mag force = q v B = 5.60x 10-6 * 375 * 1.4 = 0.002940 N . The elec force is still there, so . total force = 0.001372i + 0.002940 k . (c) Now when it moves along the z axis, there is a magneticforce from each of the y and x components . mag force in x direction, from ycomponent: 0.002940 in -xdirection . mag force in y direction, from x component: 5.60 x 10-6 * 375 * 1.8 = 0.003780 . total force then, including 0.001372 in x direction fromelec force is . -0.001568 i + 0.003780 j .
