Question

A mass sitting on a horizontal, frictional surface is attached toone end of a string, the other end of a wall. 6.0 J of work isrequired to compress the spring 0.14 m. If the mass is releasedfrom rest with the spring compressed, it experiences a maximumacceleration of 13 m/s2

a) Find the value of the spring constant
b) Find the value of the mass

Explanation / Answer

(a) We know that        Work done W = 0.5kx2 ==>   k = 2 W / x2               = 2 * 6 / 0.14*0.14               = 612.24 N / m (b)         We know that               F = kx        ==> ma = kx        ==> m = k x / a                   = 612.24 * 0.14 / 13                   = 6.593 kg
