Question
A ball A is thrown vertically upward from the top of a 36-m-high building with an initial velocity of 4 m/s. Atthe same instant another ball B is thrown upward from the ground with an initial velocity of 20 m/s Determine the height from the ground at which they pass Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units h 33.9 m Submit Previous Answers Request Answer X Incorrect; Try Again; 3 attempts remaining Part B Determine the time at which they pass. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. t-2.25 s Previous Answer CorrectExplanation / Answer
We need to find the position and time at which both balls will pass .
So applying the equation of motion :
s = s0 +v0t +(1/2)at2
Their position will be same while passing , hence equaling the equations as
36+ 4t + (1/2)(-9.81)t2 = 0 + 20t + (1/2)(-9.81)t2
36 + 4t = 20t
36 = 16t
i.e. t = 2.25 s ( this is the time at which they pass)
Now finding height by equation:
s = s0+v0t +(1/2)at2
= 0 + 20(2.25)+(1/2)(-9.81)(2.25)2
= 20.168 m ( height from the ground at which they pass)
