Question

The image shows a connected system. The orange block on the left has a mass of 4 kg; the blue block on the table has a mass of 5 kg, and the green block on the right has a mass of 1 kg. If ,-k = 0.20, what is the acceleration of the system? Show all calculations in the answer box. Hint: A complete answer should include three equations: Newton's second law applied to each of the three blocks. With them, the next step is to solve the three equations for three unknowns: the acceleration and two tensions

Explanation / Answer

Let the masses move to the right with acceleration a

writing the force equations we have

4g - T1 = 4a ------------(1)

T1 - T2 - u*5g = 5a

T1 -T2 - 0.2*5g = 5a -------(2)

T2 - g = a --------(3)

adding all the equations we have

2g = 10 a

a = g/5 = 9.8 / 5 = 1.96 m/s2

acceleration of the system = 1.96 m/s2
