Question
On a distant planet, golf is just as popular as it is on earth. A golfer tees off and drives the ball 1.7 times as far as he would have on earth, given the same initial velocities on both planets. The ball is launched at a speed of 47 m/s at an angle of 56° above the horizontal. When the ball lands, it is at the same level as the tee.
(a) On the distant planet, what is the maximum height of the ball?
(b) On the distant planet, what is the range of the ball?
I got 2.8 for a, which was wrong and 355.6 for b which was correct.
Explanation / Answer
For range to be 1.7 times the air time of Golf ball should be 1.7 time as well
Formula for time on earth
h=u*t+0.5*a*t^2
0=47*sin56*t+0.5*9.8*t^2
t(earth)=7.95 s
time at distant planet =13.518 s
Calculation for a at distant planet
0=47*sin56*13.518+0.5*a*13.518^2
a=-5.765 m/s^2
Hmax = 47*sin56*(13.518/2)+0.5*(-5.765 )*(13.518/2)^2
=131.68 m
