The Endothelial cells areused to form the luminal vascular surface .They play a central role in the regulation of coagulation against the stressor. The endothelial cells control the clotting system by regulation of the expression of binding sites which are basically present for anticoagulant and procoagulant factors .These factors are presenton the cell surface.
On the other hand,in the quiescent state, these endothelial cells are very important and are used to maintain blood fluidity .This is done by promoting the activity of numerous anticoagulant pathways. These activities include the protein C/protein S pathway. The cytokines help to ensure that the balance of endothelial properties can be tipped easily in favor of clot formation .This is usually possible with the help of coordinated induction of procoagulant and suppression of anticoagulant mechanisms. Finally we have the Tumor necrosis factor which is used to suppress the the formation of throbomodulin which is basically an endothelial anticoagulant cofactor, ,.This helps to induce the expression of tissue factor and this is actually the t procoagulant cofactor
