Question

Explain the relationships observed in each of the graphs, compare between the two graphs and speculate on why they are so different. Hint: what factors affect runoff from a watershed?

Watershed Area versus Average Annual Streamflow (m3) of the Period 2004-2011, at WS 3, WS 6, WS 7, and WS 8 of HBEF 5 900000.0 800000.0 700000.0 c 600000.0 500000.0 Average Annual Streamflow (m"3) E400000.0 -Linear (Average Annual 300000.0 200000.0 | 100000.0 y 1.059x-12187 Streamflow(m^3)) WS 1 0.0 0 200000 400000 600000 800000 1000000 Watershed Area (m2)

Explanation / Answer

In the first graph, we see that there is a linear relationship between the average annual rainfall and the watershed area. Here both are directly proportional to one another.

In the next figure, we find a polylinear curve which dont show any kind of proportionality between the two factors, i.e, average annual rainfall and watershed.

We know the changes have occured due to the meterological factors which affected the runoff:

a)Type of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, etc.)

b)Rainfall intensity.

c)Rainfall amount.

d)Rainfall duration.

e)Distribution of rainfall over the watersheds.

f)Direction of storm movement.

g)Antecedent precipitation and resulting soil moisture.
