Question

A projectile is launched from ground level to the top of a cliff which is 195 m away and 155 m high (see the figure(Figure 1) ).

Part A

If the projectile lands on top of the cliff 6.7 s after it is fired, find the initial velocity of the projectile (magnitude and direction). Neglect air resistance.

Explanation / Answer

initial horizontal speed of projection, vo,x = 195/6.7

=29.1 m/s

Let initial vertical speed of projection be: vo,y

So, using the equation of motion,

s = ut + 0.5*at^2

So, 155 = (vo,y)*6.7 + 0.5*(-9.8)*6.7^2

So, vo,y = 56 m/s

So, initial speed of projection = sqrt(vo,x^2 + vo,y^2)

= sqrt(29.1^2 + 56^2)

= 63.1 m/s <--------- answer

direction of projection = atan(56/29.1)

= 62.5 deg with respect to horizontal
