Question

An airplane is flying at a speed of 1.80 times 10^2 in level flight at an altitude of 9.00 times 10^2 package is to be dropped from the airplane to land on a target on the ground. Ignore air resistance (a) At what horizontal distance away from the target should the package be released so lands on the target? b) What will be the vertical component of the velocity when the package hits the c) How fast will the package be traveling when it hits the ground? d) In what direction relative to the horizontal will the package be traveling when it hits ground?

Explanation / Answer

a) teh packet when dropped will have horizontal velocity of 1.80 x 10^2 m/s

time to reach the height of 900 m = sqroot ( 2 x 900/ 9.8) = 13.55 seconds apprx

sistance at which packet should be dropped= 13.55 ( 1.80 x 10^2) = 2439.47 m apprx

b)Vy = 9.8 ( 13.55) =132.79 m/s apprx on reaching ground

c)speed on hitting ground = sqroot ( 132.79^2 +180^2) = 223.68 m/s apprx

d)angle = tan^-1 (132.79/ 180)=36.417 degree apprx
