Question

A model of an electric dipole was constructed, as shown in class. Assume the connecting toothpick between the styrofoam balls is massless and insulating, each ball can he treated as a point charge having magnitude 4x10^-10 C, the distance between the centers of the balls is 5 cm, and the electric field magnitude between the foil plates is 8000 N/C. We observed that when the dipole is perpendicular to the electric field, it is in rotational equilibrium. Find the magnitude of the external torque that the suspending string applies to the dipole to keep it in rotational equilibrium.

Explanation / Answer

dipole momet , p = q d = (4 x 10^-10) (0.05)

= 2 x 10^-11 C m

E = 8000 N/C

torque = p x E = p E sin(theta)

= (2 x 10^-11) (8000) sin90

= 1.6 x 10^-7 N m
