At the instant shown, a police car P is distance de 760 m from the intersection and moving at speed vp 76 km/h. Motorist M is distance dy -600 m from the iritersection and moving at speed v-60 km/h. What are the (a) x component and (b) y-component of the velocity of the motorist wilth respect to the police car? For police car
dp = 750 m
vp = 76 km/hr = 21.11 m/s
dm = 600 m
vm = 60 km/hr = 16.667 m/s
Velocity of motortist wrt velocity of police car = Vm - Vp
in cartesian coordinates
Vm = -60 j km/hr
Vp = -76 i km/hr
so Vmp = Vm - Vp = -60j + 76i = 76i - 60j
a. x component = 76 km/hr
b. y component = -60 km/hr
c. angle of this velocity with horisontal, theta = arctan(Vy/Vx) = -38.29 deg wrt +x axis
angle of line of sight with h orizontal +x axis = 180 - arctan(dm/dp) = 141.340 deg
angle b/w velocity and line of sight = 179.63019 or 0.3698 deg ( approximately 0)
