Question
Part A A heat engine carries 1 mole of an ideal gas around the following cycle: Starting at a volume of 4.5 m3 and a temperature of 400K (point A), the gas expands isobarically to a final volume of 8 m (point B). Then, the gas is cooled down isochorically back down to its initial temperature (point C). The cycle is then completed with an isothermal process returning the gas to its original state (point A). The cycle is shown in the figure below.(Figure 1) Calculate QH for the cycle. Submit My Answers Give Up | Figure 1 of 1 Incorrect; One attempt remaining; Try Again Part B Calculate Qc for the cycle. Submit My Answers Give Up Incorrect; One attempt remaining; Try Again Part C Calculate the efficiency of the engineExplanation / Answer
First we know all the three process and calculate all the properties
Process A-B = contant pressure process
Process B-C = constant volume process
Process C-A = Constant temperature process
Now At point A
Va = 4,5 m3 , Ta = 400 K
we know
PV = nRT
Pa x 4.5 = 1 x 8.314 x 400
Pa = 739.02 bar
Now At point B
Vb = 8 m3 , TB = ? , Pb = 739.02 bar
again
Pv = nRT
739.02 x 8 = 1 x 8.314 x Tb
Tb = 711.1 K
and point C
Vc = 8 m3 , Tc = 400k
hence
PV = nRT
p x 8 = 1 x 8.314 x 400
Pc = 415.7 bar
Part (A)
QH = Cv (Tb - Ta)
= 20.785 (711.1 - 400)
= 6466.21 J
