Question
A truck driver has a shipment of apples to deliver to a destination 550 miles away. The trip usually takes him 10.0 hours. Today he finds himself daydreaming and realizes 120 miles into his trip that that he is running 30.0 minutes later than his usual pace at this point. If the driver still wishes to complete the trip in 10.0 hours, how fast must he drive for the rest of the trip? (In all questions, you may assume that the truck moves with a constant speed.)
How long does it usually take the truck driver to travel the first 120 miles of his trip?
Express your answer using three significant figures. _________
If the truck driver still wants to complete his trip in 10.0 hours, how much time does he have left for the remainder of his trip?
Express your answer using three significant figures. ________
Explanation / Answer
The usual speed of the truck drive when he dont day dream is:
v = 550/10 = 55 mi/h
after day dreaming the time left is:
T = 120/55 = 2.181 hr
T = 2.181 hr ----> Answer to first part
T = 2 hr and 11 min
At this time the driver still has,distnace D to go
D = 550 - 120 = 430 mi
He is running late by 30 min or in total, t' = 2.11 + .30 = 2.41 = 2.683 hrs
So he has to cover D in time,
t = 10 - 2.683 = 7.317 hrs ---> Answer to second part.
