Question

A small object is attached to a horizontal spring, pushed to position x=A, and released. The object in the resulting simple harmonic motion oscillates with period T.

1)How long does it take for the object to travel a total distance of 3A?

T/4

T/2

3T/4

T

5T/4

3)How would your answer to the previous question change if the object was initially pushed to position x=A/2x=A/2 and given an initial velocity such that in the resulting simple harmonic motion the object oscillates with amplitude AA and period TT?

The time will increase by T/2

The time will increase by T/4

The time will decrease by T/2

The time will decrease by T/4

No change in the answer

Explanation / Answer

1)

Given , total time period = T

for distance A, time period will be T/4 ( quarter of time period for each distance of amlitude A).

then, for time period for distance 3A ,     t = 3T/4

so, correct option - third

3) we can see that object again oscillates with the same amplitude. So, energy will be same as it was in previous question. Thus, Time period will be same as it was in the previous question.

so, there will no any change in answer. ( this is correct option.)
