Question

A photon with energy 2.52 eV is absorbed by a hydrogen atom. a) Find the minimum n for a hydrogen atom that can be ionized by such a photon. Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. b) Find the speed of the electron released from the state in part (a) when it is far from the nucleus. km/s A photon with energy 2.52 eV is absorbed by a hydrogen atom. a) Find the minimum n for a hydrogen atom that can be ionized by such a photon. Explanation / Answer

energy of different levels of hydrogen atom

n=1 E = -13.6ev

so photon cant eject electron from n=1

n=2 E = -3.4ev

so photon cant eject electron from n=2

n=3 E = -1.51ev

so photon can eject electron from n= 3 and energy of electron would be 2.52-1.51 = 1.01ev

equating this energy to 0.5mv^2 we can find velocity of electron which you have already found.
