Question

Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. An airplane travels 3.95 times 10^2 km due east and then travels an unknown distance due north. Finally, it returns to its starting point by traveling a distance of 519 km. How far did the airplane travel in the northerly direction? 336 km A plane flies 337 km due south, then turns and flies 622 km at a heading north of east, until it's due east of its starting point. If the plane now turns and heads for home, how far will it have to go? _______ up with an answer smaller than the second leg of the trip. Use a drawing to sort out the given information and help you to determine the desired unknown. km

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

for the plane , for it's final displacement

-337 j + 622 * (cos(theta) i + j * sin(theta)) = 0

for north south displacement to be zero

622 * sin(theta) - 337 = 0

theta= 32.8 degree

Now, distance travelled to go home = 622 * cos(32.8 degree)

distance travelled to go home = 522.8 km
