Question
A small object has a mass of 3.2 times 10^-3 kg and a charge of -33 mu C. It is placed at a certain spot where there is an electric field. When released, the object experiences an acceleration of 2.55 times 10^3 m/s^2 in the direction of the +x axis. Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field magnitude __________ N/C direction _____________ The drawing shows three arrangements of charged particles, all the same distance from the origin. Rank the arrangements, largest to smallest, according to the total electric potential V at the origin. A, B and C (a tie) A, B, C B, A, C B, C, A A and C (a tie), BExplanation / Answer
mass m = 3.2 x 10-3 kg
charge q = - 33 x 10-6 C
accelaration a = 2.55 x 103 m/s2
let the electric field be E
accelaration a = Eq/m
Electric field E = m a /q
= (3.2 x 10-3 x 2.55 x 103) /33 x 10-6
= 0.25 x 106 N/C
as it is a negative charge which is directed opposite to the electric field. Hence the required direction is - x axis
