Question

The cell pictured below has a trisomy of the medium sized chromosome (trisomy means there are three of these chromosomes). Paternal chromosomes are black and maternal chromosomes are white. Which of the situations below could have lead to this condition in this cell? Select all that apply. Nondisjunction in anaphase 1 of meiosis in father Nondisjunction in anaphase 2 of meiosis in father Nondisjunction in anaphase 1 of meiosis in mother Nondisjunction in anaphase 2 of meiosis in mother Failure to replicate the chromosome in father Failure to replicate the chromosome in mother

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

TRISOMY :. Trisomy is when a diploid organism has three copies of one of its chromosomes instead of two. Trisomy is an example of aneuploidy, or an organism having an abnormal number Chromosomes.

The Chromosomes

Chromosomes are thread-like structures composed of DNA and other proteins. They are present in every cell of the body and carry the genetic information needed for that cell to develop. Genes, which are units of information, are "encoded" in the DNA. Human cells normally have 46 chromosomes which can be arranged in 23 pairs. Of these 23, 22 are alike in males and females; these are called the "autosomes." The 23rd pair are the sex chromosomes ('X' and 'Y'). Each member of a pair of chromosomes carries the same information, in that the same genes are in the same spots on the chromosome. However, variations of that gene ("alleles") may be present. (Example: the genetic information for eye color is a "gene;" the variations for blue, green, etc. are the "alleles.")

1)Non -disjunction in ANAPHASE 1 of meeriosis in mother.

2) Non disjunction in ANAPHASE 1 OF MEIOSIS FATHER .

3)FAILURE TO REPLICATE THE CHROMOSOME IN MOTHER.
