Question
The catalytic behavior of the isozymes of liver and brainphosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) was observed in the presence of AMP,phosphate, and fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. The table below shows theconcentration of each effector required to achieve 50% of Vmax.Compare the response of the two isozymes to the three effectors anddiscuss the implications of their different responses.
Isozyme Phosphate (µM) AMP(µM) F2,6P (µM)
Liver 200 10 0.05
Brain 350 75 4.5
Explanation / Answer
That's a hard question :) Normally PFK-1 is activated by AMP and phosphate (and inhibited by ATP) so i would imagine PFK-1 would be more active in the brain and less active in the liver because of the particular concentrations. This makes sense to me because the brain depends on glucose breakdown much more than the liver does. That's all i know though. Hope this helps.
