Question

Watch the video clip on titled “Tangle Swing”.(I have already taken the appropriate measurements and have included my times in the problem as you read.) Take a time measurement to determine the approximate length of Rapunzel’s Hair. You may wish to watch the other video posted from “Science Friday” radio program. I already took a time measurement from this video clip of 18.3 sec at the begin of the fall and 21.9 sec at the bottom=3.6 seconds total. Our professor wants us to use the equation T=2pie square root of l over g. I just need to understand how to do the problem and to have someone walk me through step-by-step. Thank you. The goal is to obtain the length of Rapunzel's hair.

Explanation / Answer

The time you measured is, T/4 = 3.6 s, (if the time 3.6 s you measured was the time taken to reach the bottom for the first time after start of fall)

So, T = (3.6 s)4 = 14.4 s

You have to use the equation,

T = 2[l/g]

or,  14.4 s = (6.28)[l/(9.8 m/s2)]

or, [l/(9.8 m/s2)] = 14.4/6.28 = 2.293

or, [l/(9.8 m/s2)] = (2.293)2 = 5.26

or, l/(9.8 m/s2) = 5.26

or, l = 5.26X(9.8) = 51.526

or, l = 51.5 m, approx. is the length of the Hair.....
