Question

This question has been answered before, but did not yield the answer that was requested.

Previous question: Assume harmonic P waves are traveling through a solid with ? = 10 km/s. If the maximum strain is 10?8 , what is the maximum particle displacement for waves with periods of: (a) 1 s, (b) 10 s, (c) 100 s?

Answer

a) For 1 sec

maximum particle displacement for waves =   10-8 * 10000 * 1

                                                                     = 10-4   m

b)   For 10 sec

maximum particle displacement for waves =   10-8 * 10000 * 10

                                                                     = 10-3 m

c)   For 100 sec

maximum particle displacement for waves =   10-8 * 10000 * 100

                                                                     = 10-2 m

This was the answer that recieved 0 points.

Explanation / Answer

a) If there is no strain the length travelled in 1 s = 8000 m

due to strain, the change in length = 8000 * 10-7 = 8*10-4 m;

therefore maximum displacement = (8000+8*10-4) m.

Similarly

b) length in 10 s = 80000 m

chage due to strain = 8*10-3 m.

therefore maximum displacement = (80000+8*10-3) m.

And

c) length in 100 s = 800000 m

chage due to strain = 8*10-2 m.

therefore maximum displacement = (800000+8*10-2) m.
