The allocation of water resources is a problem around the world. The Nile River flows through many countries. If people from upstream take too much, those who live downstream may be left with little or nothing. Refer to a map of the region while you think and discuss this question. Through which countries does the Nile pass? What ideas can you suggest for allocating water from the Nile among the many potential users? What agreements currently exist to allocate water from the Nile?

Through which countries does the Nile pass?

The Nile is shared by Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic republic of Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt ( 11 countries).

Q2 .What ideas can you suggest for allocating water from the Nile among the many potential users?

Water politics along the Nile has been discussed and debated for many years now.

In my view, instead of physical distribution of water, it is easy to share the benefits derived from the use of water. This is called benefit sharing. A reliable mechanism of benefit sharing must be discussed, debated and put into action. This requires close cooperation and understanding among the riparian countries of the Nile. Along with political will, International bodies may be required to monitor such pacts.

Q3 What agreements currently exist to allocate water from the Nile?

1929 – The Agreement between Egypt and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. This agreement water gave Egypt the exclusive power to monitor development activities along the Nile.

The 1959 Nile Waters Agreement between the Sudan and Egypt for full control utilization of the Nile waters.

Recent treaty 'the Nile Basin Cooperative Frame Work Agreement' launched in (1997-2007) seeks to cooperate to achieve common goals and the allocation of water resources among the riparian countries.
