Question
Item 4 A0.147 kg glider is moving to the right on a frictionless, horizontal air track with a speed of 0.720 m/s.lthas a head-on collision with a 0.300 kg glider that is moving to the left with a speed of 2.24 m/s. Suppose the collision is elastic. Part A Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.147 kg glider. 6.79 m/s Submit My Answers Give Up incorrect; Try Again; 3 attempts remaining Part B Find the direction of the final velocity of the 0.147 kg glider. O to the right to the left Submit My Answers Give Up incorrect; Try Again: 5 attempts remaining Part C Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.300 kg gliderExplanation / Answer
m1 = 0.147 kg and u1 = 0.720 m/s
m2 = 0.300 kg and u2 = 2.24 m/s
collides elastically. so
(A) final vel of 0.147 kg
v1 = [ u1(m1 - m2) + 2m2u2] / (m1 + m2)
v1 = [0.72(0.147 - 0.3) + 2 x 0.3 x 2.24]/(0.147 + 0.3) = 2.76 m/s
Putting values we obtain
v1 = 2.76 m/s
(B) Direction of 0.147 kg will be oppsite now, so its moving to the left with velocity 2.76 m/s
(C)magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider
v2 = [u2(m2 - m1) + 2m1u1 ] / (m1 +m2)
after putting the values we get
v2 = [2.24(0.3- 0.147) + 2 x 0.147 x 0.72]/(0.147 + 0.3) = 1.24 m/s
v2 = 1.24 m/s
(D) direction of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider will be towards left only
