Question
Long, long ago, on a planet far, far away, a physics experiment was carried out. First, a 0.220-kg ball with zero net charge was dropped from rest at a height of 1.00 m. The ball landed 0.450 s later. Next, the ball was given a net charge of 7.75 C
and dropped in the same way from the same height. This time the ball fell for 0.635 s before landing.
What is the electric potential at a height of 1.00 m above the ground on this planet, given that the electric potential at ground level is zero? (Air resistance can be ignored.)
Explanation / Answer
Acceleration due to gravity on that planet = 2 X 1 / 0.452 = 9.8765m/s2
new acceleration for the charged body = 2 X 1/0.6352 = 4.960m/s2
Change in acceleration = 9.8765 - 4.960= 4.9165m/s2
Net electric force = ma = 5.0691 X 0.22 = 1.1152 N
V X 7.75X10-6 = 1.1152
This gives V = 143896.77v
