Question
A relief airplane is delivering a food package to a group of people stranded on a very small island. The island is too small for the plane to land on, and the only way to deliver the package is by dropping it. The airplane flies horizontally with constant speed of 352 km/hour at an altitude of 525 m . The positive x and y directions are defined in the figure. For all parts, assume that the "island" refers to the point at a distance D from the point at which the package is released, as shown in the figure. Ignore the height of this point above sea level. Assume that the acceleration due to gravity is g = 9.80 m/s2 .
Need answer in ft/s^2 and i got 4.379 but it was wrong apparently
Explanation / Answer
as said in question that initilly it is moving in horizonatl direction with velocity 352Km/hour=97.77778m/sec but accelartion i horizontal is zero
and verically downward velocity is zero
time of flying=t
h=ut+0.5gt2
525=0*t+0.5*9.81*t2
t=10.34570second
now distance it cover on land,D =10.345*97.777778=1011.58017m
now speed of package when it hit ground Vf
let final vertical speed when it hit ground say Vy=0+9.80*10.34570=101.38786m/s
so vf2=101.38762+3522
vf =366.310m/s=1201.80446 ft/s
