Question
A 72.0 kg ice hockey goalie, originally at rest, catches a 0.150 kg hockey puck slapped at him at a velocity of 27.0 m/s. Suppose the goalie and the ice puck have an elastic collision and the puck is reflected back in the direction from which it came. What would their final velocities (in m/s) be in this case? (Assume the original direction of the ice puck toward the goalie is in the positive direction. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)
puck ..................m/s
goalie.................. m/s
Explanation / Answer
m1 u1 + m2 u2 = m1 v1 + m2 v2
0 + (0.150 * 27) = 72 v1 + 0.15 v2
72 v1 + 0.15 v2 = 4.05 ----------------(1)
v2 - v1 = u1 - u2
v2 - v1 = -27 ---------------(2)
solving the above equations
v1 = 0.112 m/s
v2 = -26.88 m/s
