Question

n a weightless environment, 5 ml of vinegar is put in a test tube and baking soda is added to it. immediately after, a balloon is fitted over the top of the test tube. Which of the following will you observe once the pressure in the test tube is high enough? Select one: o a. Test tube remains at rest and balloon moves away from it. b. Test tube and balloon move in opposite directions to each other. c. The test tube and balloon move in the direction of the balloon. d·The test tube and balloon move in the direction of the test tube.

Explanation / Answer

b) The test tube and balloon move in opposite directions.

From conservation of momentum the high pressure in test tube pushes the balloon up as a reaction the test tube moves down with equal momentum of balloon.

Same can also be understand well from Newton's third law of motion. The force causing the balloon up and the reaction is the test tube moving down.
