1. Suppose the same 200 g mass was hooked onto the end of three different springs, Si, S2, and S3, where S, has the smallest spring constant and S3 has the largest. List the springs in order of increasing displacement from equilibrium. Explain your reasoning. 2. Now the springs of#1 are set into SHM with the 200 gram mass. List the springs in order of increasing period. Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1)

Force acting on each spring is same and is equal to the weight of the 200g mass.

We know, F = kx

Since F is constant,

kx = constant

or x = constant/k

i.e. x is inversely proportional to k.

Thus, springs in increasing order of displacement are:

S3, S2, S1.

2)

Period is given by:

T = 2pi* sqrt (m/k)

i.e. T is inversely proportional to sqrt(k).

So, More the k, less is the period T.

Thus springs in increasing order of period are:

S3 , S2, S1.
