Question

Hi, can you please answer Step 1 A please! Thank you!

Description of the data: KIN 371 students (assume they were randomly sampled) completed a questionnaire about their 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic viewing habits. Students were asked three questions: 1. Did you ever participate in a winter sport that is currently a part of the 2018 Winter Olympics? • Response options were 'Yes' or 'No'. • This variable is labelled as “Participation in Olympic Sport' in the assignment data file. 2. How many hours did you spend watching the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday and Sunday (March 10 & 11)? Participants were able to select the number of hours they watched the Olympics over Saturday and Sunday This variable is labelled as “Saturday and Sunday Olympic Viewing? 3. How many hours did you spend watching the 2018 Winter Olympics on Monday and Tuesday (March 12 & 13)? Participants were able to select the number of hours they watched the Olympics over Monday and Tuesday This variable is labelled as “Monday and Tuesday Olympic Viewing The Task: Researchers were interested in two research hypotheses: Hypothesis 1 Students who participated in a winter sport that is currently a part of the 2018 Winter Olympics would spend more time viewing the Olympics on a weekend then those students who did not participate in a winter sport that is currently a part of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Hypothesis 2 Students would view more of the 2018 Winter Olympics on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) then they would on weekdays (Monday and Tuesday). Your task is to address both research hypotheses by selecting the appropriate statistical analysis and drawing a conclusion. For both of the research hypotheses you need to complete the following steps: Step 1. a) Select and state the appropriate statistical analysis given the research hypothesis (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks).

Explanation / Answer

1.(a) Given Hypothesis 1, the appropriate statistical analysis would be to test whether the (population) mean number of hours spent by the students who participated in a winter sport is greater than the (population) mean number of hours spent by the students who did not participate in a winter sport. This will be done by carrying out a two independent sample t-test on the two population means mentioned above.
Given Hypothesis 2, the appropriate statistical analysis would be to test whether the (population) mean number of hours spent by students watching the Winter Olympics on Saturday and Sunday is greater than the (population) mean number of hours spent by students watching the Winter Olympics on Monday and Tuesday. This will be done by carrying out a paired sample t-test on the two population means mentioned above.
