Question
A particle of mass M moving with 6 m/s the positive x-axis direction makes a head-on elastic collision with a stationary particle of mass 3M. After collision, the two particles rebound along the x-axis. What is of the lighter object? 9. A 2 m horizontal uniform board weighs 100 N and has a 50 N point mass attached to its left end. Calculate the distance (in m) of the center of mass of the system from the left end of the board. A turntable undergoes constant acceleration from rest to 2 rev/s after turning 1.5 revolutions. Find the angular acceleration.Explanation / Answer
8) m1 = M , u1 = 6 m/s, m2 = 3M , u2 =0
from conservation of momentum
m1u1 +m2u2 = m1v1 +m2v2
M*6 + 0 = M*v1 +3M*v2
6 = v1 +3 v2 .. (1)
for elastic collision
v2 - v1 = u1 - u2
v2 - v1 = 6 ..(2)
from (1) and (2) we get
v1 = -3 m/s, v2 = 3 m/s
velcoity of lighter object is 3 m/s along -x direction
10) wo = 0 , w = 2 rev/s, theta = 1.5 rev
for rotational kinematic equations
w^2 - wo^2 = 2*alpha *theta
2^2 -0 = 2*alpha*1.5
alpha = 1.33 rev/s^2
