Question
One of the isotopes of hydrogen is called deuterium. (It's an important component of "heavy" water.) A deuteron (ionized) is a particle made from one proton bound to one neutron. A deuteron moving with a speed of 6 times 10^5 m/s, perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field of 0.85 T, would follow a circular path. Determine the radius of this circular path, and pick which path the particle would take in the diagram above. A 50-turn coil of radius 15 cm is placed in a uniform magnetic field as shown. The overall resistance of the coil is 0.75 Ohm. If the magnetic field increases from 0.5 T to 4.5 T in 1.5 seconds, determine the magnitude of the average induced current in the coil. Also, indicate the direction of the induced current on the diagram below.Explanation / Answer
Velocity v = 6 x10 5 m / s
Magnetic field B = 0.85 T
Mass of deuteron m = 2 u = 2x1.67 x10 -27 kg
In magnetic field ,Bvq = mv 2 / r
Bq = mv / r
From this radius of the path r = mv / Bq Where q = charge = 1.6 x10 -19 C
r = (2x1.67x10 -27 ) (6x10 5) /(0.85 x1.6 x10 -19 )
= 0.01473 m
