Question
A wire 28.0 cm long lies along the z-axis and carries a current of 8.20 A in the +z-direction. The magnetic field is uniform and has components Bx = -0.238 T , By = -0.989 T , and Bz = -0.349 T .
Part A Find the x-component of the magnetic force on the wire. F_x=......N
Part B Find the y-component of the magnetic force on the wire.
Part C Find the z-component of the magnetic force on the wire.
Part D What is the magnitude of the net magnetic force on the wire? F=......N
Your help is hugely appreciated.
Explanation / Answer
let i,j and k are unit vectors along +ve x, +ve y and +ve z axis.
force on a current carrying wire=I*cross product of L and B
where I=current magnitude
L=length of the wire
direction of L is along the direction of current
B is magnetic field
given I=8.2 A
L=28 cm=0.28 m
direction of current is along +k.
B=-0.238 i -0.989 j -0.349 k
magnetic force=8.2*0.28*cross product of (k and (-0.238 i -0.989 j -0.349 k))
=8.2*0.28*(-0.238 j +0.989 i)
=2.27074 i -0.54645 j
answers are:
part a:
x component of magnetic force=2.27074 N
part b:
y component of magnetic force=-0.54645 N
part c:
z component of magnetic force=0 N
part d:
magnitude of force
=sqrt(2.27074^2+0.54645^2)
=2.3356 N
